Hello, Friends! I’m getting a jumpstart on fall recipes this week by sharing this really easy and delicious recipe for apple hand pies made in the air fryer! This recipe is extra special because I used Arctic ApBitz® dried apples courtesy of my friends at Okanagan Specialty Fruits™. Back in May, I shared a recipe using Arctic® apples and I gushed about why I’m such a fan of these non-browning apples! Today I’m switching things up a bit by using the dried version of these apples, ApBitz™ snacks in the Arctic® Granny variety (they’re also available in the Arctic® Golden variety).
Not only do Arctic ApBitz™ dried apples make a delicious and healthy snack, you can also use them when making pie filling! At first, I was a little skeptical when somebody told me you could use dried apples when making pie filling. But after experimenting with it, I honestly prefer using Arctic ApBitz® snacks compared to any canned filling that I’ve tasted. You simply add a small amount of very hot water and let the apples soak for 60-90 minutes. Yes, it’s that easy!!
Another reason to reach for dried apples is because of food waste. Did you know that apples are one of the most wasted foods in the fresh food supply chain? In fact, it is estimated that at least 40% of fresh apples are wasted each year. WOW!! This inspired the creators of Arctic® apples to develop nonbrowning apple varieties to help reduce unnecessary food waste. And they created Arctic ApBitz™ snacks, which is the dried version of their non-browning apples, to ensure that their apples that aren’t suitable for slicing don’t end up wasted. How cool is that??
I also chose to bake these in the air fryer! If you look at most recipes for hand pies, they are often pan fried. I didn’t want to fry these, so instead I put them in the air fryer as a way to reduce calories and speed up cooking time! Not only are they delicious, but they are only around 140 calories per serving! The recipe makes 8 pies, but you could easily prepare and freeze and pull out as needed.
